Glenwood School - Westwind School Division

Dress Code:

We believe that the way a student dresses effects their education. We would therefore ask students to please dress in a neat and comely manner. All shirts must have some sort of sleeve, they must cover the midriff, and we would ask no short shorts be worn. Also, clothing that depicts any kind of gang related, pornographic, or inappropriate material may not be worn. Hats are not to be worn inside the school building.

Gum:

We ask that gum not be chewed in the school, as there are too many problems with improper disposal.

Library:

The Glenwood School Library shall enrich and support the instructional school program and encourage the students to appreciate the discovery, pleasure and enjoyment of reading. The library shall also help students develop research skills to support the school curriculum. The library shall try to meet the needs and interests of individual students. The library will be open before school in the morning and during regular class time hours. The facility is not open during recess or lunch.

Lost and Found:

We find that there are many articles left in the school. The procedure for these articles is: before and after school, students may check with the principal or custodian to look at the lost and found at the end of each month and during Parent Teacher Conference, these articles will be put in the hallway to get gone through and claimed by students. They are then stored and a parent may come and got through the lost and found at any time. At the end of the school year, any items not claimed will be disposed of.

Lunch

Students are to eat lunch in their homerooms and have 15 minutes to finish lunch. After that time they should go outside for fresh air unless they have a note from home asking that the student stay inside. Any student staying in is asked to be in the classroom at his or her desk doing something quietly. Junior High students will have intramurals in the gym during the winter months. On most days the Business Class of the school runs a concession. Purchases must be made within the first 10 minutes of the lunchtime.

Opening Exercises:

There will be an opening assembly for the whole school at the beginning of each week consisting of singing "Oh Canada" while the flag is being raised. These will be held in the gym at 8:15 am usually Monday morning. Students and classes are always invited to perform any special numbers at this time. Periodically presentations will be made. Parents are welcome to attend any or all assemblies. Each class will hold individual opening exercises on the remaining days, with the staff and students singing "Oh Canada".

Recess and Noon:

During recess time, after the first 5 minutes for washroom necessities, and noontime after the first 20 minutes (lunch and washroom) all students should exit the building for fresh air and exercise. If the weather is severe, students may remain in the room working, reading, or quietly visiting. Students may, with the teacher's permission, remain in the classroom to complete assignments or if ill. No running or games of any kind are to be done in the halls.

Rewards and Contests:

Every month students who have 100% attendance will have their name put in for a draw at year's end. Contests may be held for clean rooms etc. Any student achieving 100% attendance throughout the school year receives a special award and all the banana splits they want on the last day of school. This may be affected if a student has a large number of lates.

Snowballs:

There is a snowball throwing area, which is south of the parking lot, and this is the ONLY area where snowballs are to be thrown.

Telephone:

There is a student phone available outside the kitchen, which is for student use at recess and noon. Only local call can be made on this phone. Any long-distance calls must be made from the library under supervision. If long-distance phone calls need to be made to the school, they can be made using 1-888-626-3611 at no charge.
